Laura holds a Masters of Arts degree (2010) in Counseling from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. This degree encompasses 72 credit hours of courses in the study of theology and counseling. Laura also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from Depauw University.
Currently, Laura holds a counseling license in the state of Michigan. In addition, Laura is a trauma informed therapist fully trained in an effective form of therapy known as EMDR. Laura is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) and the Michigan Mental Health Counselors Association (MMHCA).
Laura has been in a clinical private practice setting since 2010. Her clinical focus is concentrated within the specific areas of Women’s Issues and Couples Counseling. It is Laura’s passion to help women (spanning the ages of 17 through late adulthood) find hope and strength for change. This encompasses interpersonal and intrapersonal issues, marital relationships, friendships, working relationships, parent - child relationships etc. She works with women in the areas of self esteem, boundary issues, body image, self concept, depression/anxiety, communication, assertiveness and spiritual growth. Laura is passionate about using spiritual tools rooted in biblical principles and a Christian worldview. Scripture, prayer, meditation and journaling are utilized if the client desires.
Laura also has a passion for couples/marital therapy. Her desire is for men and women to pursue greater depth in marriage, not falling into a place of mediocrity and complacency. Laura addresses issues of love, respect, trust, communication, unmet needs, wounds from the past, emotional and physical intimacy.
Laura has a primary obligation to respect the confidentiality of her clients and the information obtained during the counseling session. She reveals such information to others only with the consent of the person or person’s legal representative, except in those unusual circumstances in which not to do so would result in clear danger to the person or to others.
“I met Laura during some of the darkest days of my life. I have never considered myself a “depressed” woman. As a happily married mom of two young girls who loves God, these dark days hit hard and fast; a train wreck. I will be forever grateful for Laura’s presence, kind eyes, listening ears, loving heart, wise counsel and supportive encouragement. All of which helped lead me to where I am today; on a beautiful journey of recovery and healing.”
Husband: "Laura let me be more vulnerable than other counselors. It was okay to let my real feelings out without worrying about how it sounded or might make me look. I never feared judgment and because of that, my wife was able to hear honestly where I was at - I was able to be heard - and then Laura helped us work through it."
Wife: "As a woman, I wasn't ashamed or embarrassed or afraid talking with another woman in front of my husband. Laura supported me when I deserved support and she supported my husband when I was being selfish which showed me she was there to heal our marriage, not take sides and not judge us individually - she showed us that our marriage and our relationship was more than the two of us separately by respecting our relationship when we had forgotten how to."
"Laura's counseling has helped me to realize that it is alright to be different and speak my mind. Counseling has helped me to find boundaries to protect myself and has also helped me to believe that my struggles will eventually get better."

* Eye Movement Desensitation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach designed for working with distressing or traumatic memories. The theory behind EMDR is that many psychological difficulties are the result of distressing life experiences which have not been stored in memory properly and are said to be unprocessed or blocked. These traumatic memories may need some help to become processed, and EMDR is one way to do this.

Being a woman in the 21st century is complex and challenging. There is so much vying for our attention. The demands of marriage, family, work, health and maintaining relationships produces a tremendous amount of stress for the modern day woman. At every turn, there are multiple tasks to complete and responsibilities to fulfill. So much is expected from us. It's no wonder that we are left feeling tired, frustrated, lonely, troubled and weary.
It is Laura’s desire to "speak into" the lives of women in all seasons of life. She would love to meet with you face 2 face; sit with you, talk with you, journey with you...
Laura’s role with a this type of counseling is different than that of individual counseling. She is ”for” the marriage as a unit. Therefore, if there is ever a time when it is appropriate for her to meet with each individual separately, it must be understood that all information disclosed in those individual sessions will be accessible to all parties involved in order to benefit the relationship.
Laura is able to share general themes that your daughter and she are discussing in the therapeutic setting, but she is not able to disclose specifics. This is to ensure that your daughter trusts Laura and that F2F Counseling is a safe place to share what is on her heart. It is important for parents to note that at all times, Laura will encourage a healthy and loving relationship between the teenager and her parents. If ever Laura feels that there is something that needs to be discussed with parents, she will encourage the client to do so. Laura understands that it can be difficult for parents not knowing everything that is discussed but the counseling process will not work otherwise.
